Where to stay

Zapopan was founded in 1542, but it's the 18th-century Basilica de Zapopan that draws the most visitors. It houses the Nuestra Señora de Zapopan, a statue of the Virgin that attracts pilgrims from Mexico and beyond. Stay nearby in a posada or hospedaje for a local experience and easy exploring on foot. The Museo de Arte de Zapopan is just a short walk across Plaza de las Americas and is known for its excellent contemporary installations. The Expo Area is closer to the center of Guadalajara and offers accommodations mid-way between the two cities' attractions. Expo Guadalajara, the region's impressive fair and exhibition center, has a calendar full of diverse attractions year-round.

Zapopan has a slew of malls and shopping centers. Among the best is Plaza Galerias Guadalajara Shopping Center, in the neighborhood of La Estancia, where there are smart movie theaters as well as big brand stores. Those with shopping top of their wish list should book a room here, just to the south of Zapopan's historic attractions. There's also a cluster of affordable accommodations around La Gran Plaza Fashion Mall nearby. Choose from a mix of high-end hotels near Plaza Patria, set apart to the north, and you're also on the doorstep of the golf course at Guadalajara Country Club.

Zapopan has a growing reputation for great restaurants. Stay near the buzzing fish market, the Mercado del Mar, for fresh seafood. It's just a short walk to the north of Plaza de las Americas, around which plenty of accommodations can be found. La Estancia's restaurants offer everything from vegan dining to gourmet burgers, or for food-court classics, check out the outlets in Plaza Galerias Guadalajara Shopping Center. Places to stay near here are close to the huge Parque Metropolitano (Metropolitan Park), perfect for those wanting to walk off their lunch. A few of Zapopan's hotels are also worth a reservation for a meal in one of their restaurants, including the Hard Rock Hotel Guadalajara and the Hyatt.
