Zingst is a small resort town along the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula in the very north of Germany. It sits on the shore of the Baltic Sea and is separated from the mainland by a lagoon known as the Barther Bodden. The town is surrounded by forests and marshlands, with dozens of hiking and cycling trails and some excellent bird-watching spots in the area. It’s well known for its pristine beach, good restaurants and charming atmosphere.

Stroll along the beach and take in the view. It’s over 12 miles (20 kilometers) long, the water is clear and the bordering sand dunes are well maintained. In the summer lifeguards patrol the most popular swimming spots and local authorities set up hundreds of chairs.

Head inland to hike or cycle along one of many trails in the Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park. Summer sees colorful flowers and vibrant greenery while in spring and autumn, hundreds of migrating cranes rest in the marshes. Guided tours can be organized, and maps are available from the Kurhaus tourist information center.

Make your way back to town to enjoy a show or visit local museums and galleries. There are frequent jazz concerts and exhibitions, as well as workshops and activities for children. Visit the town museum to learn about its development into a resort destination, admire stones and custom jewelry in the adjoining Amber Workshop and browse the stalls of the nearby markets.

Kids will want to check out the town’s Experimentarium, where they can learn about science and technology at a range of exhibits. Check out the Max Hünten Haus for photography exhibitions and workshops as well as information about upcoming cultural events. Retire to a restaurant to sample local seafood or traditional German fare before you head to a pub for a cocktail or beer.

Zingst is a charming little resort town where visitors can experience coastal Germany’s natural beauty or simply relax on the beach and let the world pass by.
