Made up of charming parks and boulevards, the Berkeley Marina is a scenic waterfront area on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay. A yacht club and a hotel complement the many restaurants in this lively spot, providing stunning views of the bay. Stay for the sunset and watch the sky turn red above the water.
Find a spot on the grass in César Chávez Park and watch people flying their kites in the breeze, while others walk their dogs. The park is named for a leader of the farmworker movement. Study the César Chávez Memorial Solar Calendar, which is similar to a sundial, but for the date rather than time. Set up a picnic in the designated area and enjoy your meal against a picturesque backdrop of the water and three San Francisco Bay bridges.
Stroll along the Berkeley Marina Public Boat Ramps and pick out your favorites from the deluxe yachts moored in the still water. Go sailing from the boat ramp or let your kids frolic in the nearby Adventure Playground, which has a zip line, forts and towers. Inspect the range of blossoming plants decorating the Sharyngetti Community Garden.
The adjacent McLaughlin Eastshore State Park Seashore has gorgeous walking trails, where you can spot birds and other animals. Attend the Fourth of July celebrations here or the Berkeley Kite Festival, which is held during the last weekend of July.
The Berkeley Marina is perched on the western edge of the city, overlooking San Francisco Bay. It is just west of the districts of Northwest Berkeley and Southwest Berkeley. Ride the train to Berkeley Station and walk west for a couple of minutes to get here. You can also drive and leave your vehicle in Berkeley Marina Parking. While you’re in the area, consider visiting nearby attractions such as Aquatic Park, Albany Beach and the Golden Gate Fields.
