Krakow showing a city
Gothic church spires and cobblestone streets set the scene in the former capital city of Poland, with appealing entertainment and cultural activities.

Kraków City Centre is a showcase of one of Poland’s oldest cities. Walk through the Old Town and you’ll see one of Europe’s largest market squares, along with magnificent palaces and churches. Though the history is fascinating, Kraków’s modern side also impresses, with dazzling dining and nightlife scenes.

Start in the Main Market Square at the heart of medieval Old Town. In summer it’s the place to drink Polish beer outside winter brings Christmas markets. Dominating the scene is St. Mary’s Basilica, with two gothic spires and ceiling art on the inside. Take a tour to see the majestic stained-glass windows and acclaimed high altar.

In the center of the square is Cloth Hall, the venue for the medieval clothing trade from the 14th century. Purchase crafts and souvenirs on the ground floor. Above this is the gallery of 19th-century Polish painting. Gaze up at the soaring Town Hall Tower nearby. Climb to the top for panoramic views. The Rynek Underground runs beneath the square, with chambers now filled with audiovisual and hologram displays.

Walk through the grounds of Wawel Royal Castle and visit separate museum sections. You’ll see the Royal Private Apartments and the Crown Treasury and Amory. Admire the Exhibition of Oriental Art and magnificent State Rooms.

A popular photo opportunity, the circular Kraków Barbican was built at the end of the 15th century as protection for Florian’s Gate, the city’s only original gate remaining today. Both attractions are part of the City Defence Walls Museum. Learn about history at the National Museum, which includes a military exhibit, Polish art and decorative arts. One of the city’s most intriguing museums is the Museum of Pharmacy. See collections of thousands of pieces including laboratory equipment, medical books, mortars and instruments.

Fly to Kraków’s John Paul II International Airport for a 30-minute drive to the city center. Many top attractions are within walking distance of each other and hotels. The city also provides an efficient public transportation system.
