The house was originally built it 1740 by Major William Horton, who settled on Jekyll Island as 2nd in command to General James Oglethorpe as part of their expansion of English settlements. The house was made of tabby, a material created by burned oyster shells, sand, and water. The original house was burned during a Spanish raid in 1742. The home was rebuilt after the American Revolution, and used as a home by Poulain de Bignon who lived there until his death. In 1886 the island transitioned from an active plantation to a recreational area, and the home eventually fell into disrepair. He was Half owner of the NY Yankees and hosted many professional ball players here, including Babe Ruth.
