It has to be said that the house and grounds are superb and Met my desire to have my friend wake up on her 80th birthday in palatial surroundings. However I have just been informed at the end of breakfast that it is not included in my Expedia booking! There is no warning of that whatsoever and I think that it is deceitful and deceptive.
Loved the super shower & comfy bed.
Fabulous grounds. Well maintained & clearly signposted.
Info on systems & procedures online not ideal.I prefer paper docs.
Thought the building beautiful. The receptionist went out of her way to be helpful, in fact a number of times.Bar meal excellent and staff great.
I was woken up at 2.30am first by two people arguing and then by a group joining them, not the hotel’s fault I suppose but it took myself and my husband quite sometime to settle.
Disappointed there wasn’t a lift as my husband finds the stairs difficult. We we’re asked if we could manage and of course we said yes!!!!
Didn’t like the “ side” shower .
Overall we enjoyed ourselves.
The hotel was great, rooms clean, staff really helpful and friendly and the grounds of the hotel were beautiful with a Japanese garden located within. Would definitely recommend
Hotel was way overpriced. It was really a 3* hotel in a grand old building. The modern restaurant extension looked and felt like the restaurant at Tebay motorway services. The only hot breakfast choice was a congealed and unappetising fry-up (why no other/healthier choices when even most B&Bs offer that?). The business is clearly designed around weddings and conferences - the main bar is a function bar, the bar for general use is shoved around the corner. If you are not there as part of a wedding, you feel like you are in the way.
The garden was nice (formal garden and Japanese water garden). My advice is don’t stay here but, if you are nearby, spend an hour walking round the gardens.

Disliked: Cleanliness
The room was very small for the price , the paint on the walls was very poor (you could see the old colour through it) and the light switch was dirty 😩
The food was excellent. Staff attentive and very helpful. A little disappointing not to have a lift, especially with heavy luggage. Cleanliness was good - took a bit of getting used to, having to put a sign on the door to say your room needed cleaning - not done daily otherwise. Bed was very firm - a difficulty with arthritis, option of a softer bed topper would have been nice.

The location and the grounds of the hotel were beautiful. The room itself was not as expected small, smelly and claustrophobic. I don’t know what it was but just had a musty smell due to that couldn’t sleep. The room didn’t look like been given a good clean. The grounds were the best thing. Reception staff were really nice when checked in.
Staff accommodating and helpful, house and grounds are gorgeous, clean, warm, food delicious and room was lovely. Single glazed windows, doesn't keep all noise out. Curtains lovely and thick to keep room dark.

Always a good stay. The only thing I don't like are the tables where you're expected to eat, they are uncomfortable. Change in sausages at breakfast is also noticeable and very salty / nowhere near as good as they were! Change them back, please! :) Very helpful staff, good WiFi and clean room.
This is the second time I have stayed here and for the second time the fire alarm has activated - this time at 02:30 am requiring building evacuation on the coldest night of the year. I think we were outside for 30 minutes before we could re-enter the building. What was worrying was that there was no apparent concern by the staff in solving the problem or telling us where we should go. Then to finish off a great night, we had the sonic booms at 04:00am for a pair of RAF Typhoons in a real hurry to intercept an unresponsive commercial airliner....not a good stay at all.
Very well trained team who aim to please and go the extra mile. Would like to stay again with my two small dogs as lovely setting. Lovely relaxed and organised environment. Nice toiletries 😃
The property is interesting from a historic perspective but there are some minor irritants -
1. The distance from the parking lot to the reception desk and then to the accommodation building in the pouring rain - with suitcases.
2. The key pad on the accommodation building door lock is difficult to see particularly in the dark and pouring rain and the door requires two hands to open it, one to hold the door lock open and the other to pull the door open.
3. The first night I chose to have dinner in the restaurant and had to wait 22 minutes (yes I timed it) before I got up from my table to go to the bar to ask if it was table or bar service. During the 22 minutes a number of staff walked by or stood around talking to each other.
4. The second night I went to the restaurant and the service was better because I made a point of asking at the bar for a menu and drink. The meal I had was pretty awful.
5. The hotel had a power cut at 07:12 one morning. My (small) room was pitch black. I walked over to reception after about 15 minutes to enquire what the problem. The desk staff were not particularly helpful aside from they would not be serving breakfast and I should just sit it out. I got in the car and drove to another hotel in Ware I know of for coffee and breakfast.
6. When I returned from breakfast the power was back on but no internet. Then the fire alarm activated, which in a small room with a siren over the door was deafening. …..there is more....
