The receptionist went out of her way to be helpful, in fact a number of times.Bar meal excellent and staff great. I was woken up at 2.30am first by two people arguing and then by a group joining them, not the hotel’s fault I suppose but it took myself and my husband quite sometime to settle. Disappointed there wasn’t a lift as my husband finds the stairs difficult.We we’re asked if we could manage and of course we said yes!!!! Didn’t like the “ side” shower . It was really a 3\* hotel in a grand old building. The modern restaurant extension looked and felt like the restaurant at Tebay motorway services. The only hot breakfast choice was a congealed and unappetising fry-up (why no other/healthier choices when even most B&Bs offer that?). The business is clearly designed around weddings and conferences - the main bar is a function bar, the bar for general use is shoved around the corner. If you are not there as part of a wedding, you feel like you are in the way. The garden was nice (formal garden and Japanese water garden). Staff attentive and very helpful. A little disappointing not to have a lift, especially with heavy luggage. Cleanliness was good - took a bit of getting used to, having to put a sign on the door to say your room needed cleaning - not done daily otherwise. The room itself was not as expected small, smelly and claustrophobic. I don’t know what it was but just had a musty smell due to that couldn’t sleep.
