For many visitors, Anaheim is synonymous with Disneyland®. But there’s more to explore in this sunny Southern California destination.

With its sun-drenched streets, palm-fringed boulevards and laid-back atmosphere, Anaheim radiates the warmth and energy of Southern California. The city is home to the world-famous Disneyland® and its sister theme park, Disney California Adventure®, which together attract more than 20 million visitors each year. Beyond the theme parks’ enchanting gates, Anaheim is a hot spot for sports fans, convention-goers and sun seekers passing through on their way to adjacent beaches. With a rich agricultural history, modern shopping and dining destinations and balmy weather, Anaheim’s magic isn’t just in the parks: it’s around every corner.

The best areas for accommodation in Anaheim

First-time visitors to Anaheim will be pleased to know that some of the best accommodations are within walking distance of Disneyland®. For avid Disney fans with bigger budgets, the Disneyland® Hotel is a top choice, but there are plenty of other stylish and comfortable options just outside the park’s entrance. Many well-known hotel chains are conveniently located to the south and east of the parks.

For couples who aren’t concerned with the morning “rope drop,” the best places to stay are a few blocks off the beaten path. A handful of upscale hotels and resorts are scattered on or near Disney Way just east of the parks, and more options can be found down Harbor Boulevard adjacent to the impressive Anaheim Convention Center, surrounded by a handful of nightlife spots.

For families, some of the best places to stay in Anaheim are unsurprisingly located adjacent to the Disneyland® theme parks. Most of the budget-friendly options are located along Harbor Boulevard just east of the parks, with a smattering of family-friendly hotels on Katella Avenue and Harbor Boulevard, diagonally opposite the parks. Many of these hotels feature multiple pools and waterpark features, ideal for families looking to cool off after a day walking the parks.

Best time to visit Anaheim

  • Summer (June to September): Anaheim’s warm, dry summers are popular for theme park visits, but expect crowds and high temperatures.
  • Fall (October to November): With cooler temperatures and lighter crowds, especially in early November, this is an excellent time to visit.
  • Winter (December to February): Winter brings cooler, mild days and some rain. Post-holiday weekdays in January and February offer lighter crowds and lower prices.
  • Spring (March to May): Spring in Anaheim features mild weather and crowds, especially during school breaks.

How many days to spend in Anaheim

If you’re planning to visit Disneyland®, a two to three-day trip is recommended. Plan an extra day to catch a game at the historic Angels Stadium or see the Anaheim Ducks or a big-name concert at Honda Center. For longer stays of five to seven days, don’t miss out on a day at one of the nearby beaches.

The vibe of Anaheim

With balmy weather year-round and people from all over the world in town to experience the “Happiest Place on Earth,” Anaheim has a naturally sunny personality. Locals are welcoming to the constant stream of tourists, many of whom dress the part with Disney-themed outfits and accessories. Like all of Southern California, Anaheim is driven by car culture: everyone owns one and uses it to get around. But unlike much of Southern California, its sidewalks are full of happy visitors carrying conversations in dozens of languages. When milling around a city in which so many people are on vacation at once, it’s easy to smile and relax.

What is Anaheim famous for?

It goes without saying that Anaheim is most famous for Disneyland® and the greater Disneyland Resort®, which includes the Disney California Adventure theme park, three hotels, and Downtown Disney®: a shopping, dining and entertainment district. Native Californians know Anaheim as the first city established in Orange County, with a rich history of orange groves as far as the eye could see. It’s home to the fourth-oldest active baseball stadium in the country (Go Angels!) and the largest convention center on the West Coast, clocking in at a massive 1.8 million square feet.

Events in Anaheim

Anaheim hosts a month of free “Concerts in the Canyon” during the summertime and an annual Nutcracker Holiday Village and Tree Lighting through the winter months. Fall is jam-packed full of events: October begins with the Firkenstein craft beer festival on the first Saturday and ends with the city’s century-old Fall Festival and Halloween Parade on the last Saturday. Seasonality drives events at Disneyland Resort®, with special decorations, parades and attractions planned year-round. Disney fanatics live for the daily “rope drop,” when the park’s earliest visitors arrive bright and early to witness guards literally dropping the ropes for entry.

Top attractions in Anaheim

A day at Disneyland®, Disney California Adventure® or both is the top thing for first-timers to do in Anaheim. For both theme parks, advance planning is recommended, ideally as far out as possible, to make the most of your day. Another great activity for first-timers? Catching a game. The Angels play baseball from late March through September, just in time for the Ducks’ hockey season to kick off.

Yes, Disneyland Resort® is extremely popular with families. But it can be romantic, too. Most of the rides are designed for pairs and because dining reservations can be booked in advance, it’s easy to plan for a nice dinner out. Sun-seeking couples in Anaheim have a half-dozen beaches within driving distance. Laguna Beach is a bit farther away, but with quaint art galleries, tide pools and intimate dinner spots, it’s great for couples.

Things to do in Anaheim for families revolve around the Disneyland Resort®. Kids of all ages can have a blast at both Disneyland® and Disney California Adventure®, with attractions like Dumbo designed for the littlest park-goers. Tweens and teens will love favorites like The Haunted Mansion and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, and the whole family will adore retro classics like Space Mountain, Autopia and the Matterhorn Bobsleds.

With Disney resorts and professional sports teams, this city outside of Los Angeles offers exciting entertainment for family members of all ages.

Since 1955, when Walt Disney created Disneyland in Anaheim as a magical spot for parents and children to have fun together, Anaheim has become a world standard for entertainment, spawning Disney resorts around the world. Bring the family here for theme park action and much more.

Walt Disney’s original theme park is now known as Disneyland® Park. The Bavarian-style castle of the Magical Kingdom draws visitors in for a day of sights, food and fun. Ride in a teacup or a runaway train and enjoy the animatronics of the original Pirates of the Caribbean ride. While the park has numerous roller coasters and thrill rides, many of the more than 50 attractions are classified as slow rides, great for family members from the very young to seniors. Bring young kids to meet costumed characters, from Mickey Mouse to Star Wars Jedi. Enjoy the daily Disney parade and stay till dark for fireworks.

Just south of Disneyland Park is Disney California Adventure® Park with a Southern California theme. Ride on bumper cars and spinning swings, play at the midway games and take a drawing class at Animation Academy. Look for bears along the Grizzly River Run whitewater raft ride.

Downtown Disney® District is an open shopping area with free access outside the park. Select from 15 places to stop for a meal or snack and many shopping locations. Stay in a spa hotel next to the Disney grounds or arrive by car or bus from your Anaheim accommodations.

Attractions continue beyond Disney locations. Visit the Anaheim Packing District downtown for food and entertainment. See the neighborhood’s restored early 20th-century buildings and enjoy delicious food, as well as live music on the weekends, at the Packing House.

Watch major league baseball at Angel Stadium of Anaheim, which has hosted the Angels since 1966. The Anaheim Ducks NHL hockey team is named after a Disney film, The Mighty Ducks. Cheer them on at the nearby Honda Center or visit the site for concerts ranging from OneRepublic to Pitbull.

Things to do

Food in Anaheim

Anaheim’s food scene goes way beyond churros and hot dogs. The Anaheim Packing District, a collection of historic buildings, features a vast food hall with local bites and specialty foods ranging from Cajun and soul food favorites to Japanese dessert crepes and French petit fours. Just south of the city limits, don’t miss Little Saigon, a collection of neighborhoods that many Vietnamese people, shops, businesses and restaurants call home. It’s the top spot in town for pho, with many restaurants specializing in rich broth and tender noodles that transport you straight to Vietnam.

Nightlife in Anaheim

Like most things in Anaheim, Disneyland® plays a big part in the city’s nightlife. Many visitors wait to enter the park until dusk, when young families depart, making room for couples and young adults. After the nightly fireworks at 9:30 p.m., take advantage of the balmy evening weather and stroll the Anaheim GardenWalk for a beer and a late-night movie. Or venture south of the convention center to root for the local teams at a sports bar or enjoy a craft cocktail in a quiet lounge.

Shopping in Anaheim

Serious shoppers should plan to venture beyond the city limits to get their fix. For luxury retail, both Fashion Island in Newport Beach and South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa are must-visits for their variety of fashion, beauty and luxury goods. Bargain hunters should visit The Outlets at Orange, which is lined with dozens of retail outlets. In town, Anaheim Marketplace has a swapmeet vibe that’s popular with vintage and antique lovers. And at Disneyland Resort®, Downtown Disney® features Disney-themed shopportunities and is accessible without a ticket to the parks.

Getting around Anaheim

If the main purpose of your vacation in Anaheim is to visit Disneyland Resort®, you can get by without a car. Many hotels offer shuttles to and from the parks, and there’s a local bus line that circles the blocks around the resort with a stop directly at the main gates. But if you’re planning to explore different parts of the city or travel beyond Anaheim, a car is a must.

Anaheim currency and budget

Anaheim’s expenses are on par with those of other Southern California cities. Booking hotel packages, especially for Disneyland®, can save money. Besides park entry, budgeting around $300–$350 per day for accommodations, food and transport is generally enough. Here are some indicative prices of what you can expect to pay:

  • A meal at an inexpensive restaurant = $18.00 USD
  • A pint of domestic beer = $7.50 USD
  • A medium cappuccino = $5.25 USD
  • A meal for two at a mid-range restaurant = $68.00 USD
