Discover Newburyport’s links with the sea as you browse through the exquisite model ships, historical paintings and other relics in this museum.

Dive into Newburyport’s rich maritime past at the Custom House Maritime Museum. The charming coastal city of Newburyport is one of the eastern seacoast’s first major commercial ports. At the museum, examine model ships, maritime art and other exhibits to learn all about this fascinating time in New England’s history.

Spot the Custom House easily by its symmetrical gray stone façade. Famous architect Robert Mills, who also designed the Washington Monument and the Treasury Building in Washington, D.C., designed it in the Classical Revival style. Beginning in 1835, the federal government used the building to collect taxes on foreign goods imported through the city’s port.

Today, the Custom House is an homage to the seaport’s past. Walk through the Moseley Gallery’s stunning Hall of Ships, featuring dozens of model clipper ships. Examine the small-scale replica of the Dreadnought, a famously fast ship that was built in Newburyport. Examine half hulls, portraits and other models to learn more about these historic vessels.

The first U.S. Coast Guard station was located in Newburyport. Explore the model ships, historical photos and documents in the Coast Guard Room to learn more about this important branch of the United States Armed Forces that has existed for more than 225 years.

Discover relics and items salvaged from shipwrecks in the Brown Gallery. Meet Newburyport’s early sea captains through their portraits hanging in the Custom Collectors Office. Step back in time in the Baker Gallery, which features an incredibly detailed diorama of a 19th-century Newburyport shipyard. Check out the latest temporary exhibit in the Bushee Gallery.

Pay your admission fee at the front desk. Seniors and students have a reduced rate, while active military members and young children get in for free.

Visit the museum throughout the year. Between January and April it is only open on Saturdays, Sundays and holiday Mondays. From May to December, hours expand to Tuesday through Sunday and holiday Mondays.

Custom House Maritime Museum is in the heart of downtown Newburyport. From here, easily explore the city’s charms by foot. Walk to the nearby Waterfront Promenade Park or check out the red-brick shops lining the streets.
