Visit Meia Praia, the crown jewel of Lagos, a lively town on the Algarve rich in attractions and nightlife. As the largest beach in the area, stretching from Lagos to the west to the Odiáxere River to the east, the sandy expanse is never overcrowded. If you’re seeking low-key beach ambiance with charming beach cafés and seaside bars, this is the place to stay.
The beach is a favorite for swimming, with a wide bay and the rock formations of Ponta da Piedade protecting it from rough seas. The water is strikingly clean and the swimming area has no rocks, making this a popular choice for families. Be aware that even in the warm summer months, the water can be quite chilly. Watersports abound, including paragliding, sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding and kitesurfing.
With its lack of surrounding cliffs and backed as it is by sand dunes, Meia Praia is windier than other beaches in the region, such as Dona Ana and Camilo. Take advantage of the gusts for kite-flying and bring an umbrella to plant firmly in the sand.
If you prefer a livelier beach atmosphere, roll out your towel on the busier western end, closer to the Lagos Marina and Praia de São Roque. For a quieter ambiance, head to the eastern, less touristy side of the beach. You’ll still have access to the town amenities, but you won’t share the sand with as many visitors.
Walk to Meia Praia from town across the Lagos harbor bridge. The public bus travels from Mos Beach to the Lagos bus station and on to Praia Meia. Walk or drive the length of the beach if you’re seeking a more deserted section. Parking is available along the beach, with more spaces available on the eastern end. Watersports equipment and sun loungers are available for rent. For a beautiful beach day, with smaller crowds than most Algarve beaches, this glorious swath of sand is a great choice.
