It was also used by German occupation forces in WWII as part of their coastal defense system. In 950 Erik the Red, founder of the first Norse settlement in Greenland was born nearby. Local landowner Eirik Bjodaskalle, (circa 950 A.D.), is said to have had his large farm here. Eirik Bjodaskalle was the father of Queen Astrid, mother of the famous Viking King Olaf Tryggvason (born 968, king of Norway from 995 to 1000) who was born nearby.
