Spend a few hours strolling amid the dazzling purple hues of flowering lavender while visiting the Wanaka Lavender Farm. Spread across 20 acres (8 hectares), the farm presents a colorful foreground to dramatic alpine landscapes. Admire thousands of lavender plants and other seasonally flowering plants. Say hello to farm animals, play giant games and sample lavender-infused food and drink.
From late October through March rows of lavender sit majestically against a backdrop of lush green fields and tall peaks. Breathe in the sweet scent of the plant’s rich floral aroma as you explore. Over 30 varieties of the plant are grown here, with most used to make oils and cosmetics. Daffodils, tulips, roses and sunflowers are also visible between spring and autumn.
As you wander you’ll spot dozens of friendly farm animals. Get up close to alpacas, chickens, goats, pigs, Highland cows and Shetland ponies. Note the presence of hundreds of bumblebees, whose hives help produce the various honeys sold at the farm shop. With views of dramatic mountains in all directions there’s great photo opportunities beyond the lavender fields and animals.
The farm café has a menu inspired by the scent of lavender. Try infused teas and lavender-flavored cakes and ice cream. Grab a seat on the outdoor terrace and enjoy your goodies accompanied by dramatic mountain views. Visitors of all ages will love playing on oversized versions of classic games such as Connect Four.
Balms, creams, oils, shampoos and soaps are among several lavender-based products available at the shop. Ask for samples and inquire about the healing and soothing properties of the plant. Sample home lavender jams and chocolate in addition to the honey produced by the resident bees.
The farm is located 2.7 miles (4.3 kilometers) from Wanaka town center. Free parking is available for drivers. Nearby town attractions include the Puzzling World maze and the scenic Mount Iron Trail.
Wanaka Lavender Farm is open daily, except for Christmas Day, and there’s an admission fee. Children under 5 can enter for free. Visit the farm’s official website for more details.
