Canada’s rugged landscape and colonial history are celebrated in this picturesque town that has attracted artists and visitors since it was founded in the 1800s.

Nestled between two branches of the Humber River and surrounded by forest and rolling hills, Kleinburg has enthralled Toronto visitors for centuries with its natural beauty. Appreciate its cultural side as well as you view historic buildings lining the streets and galleries of colonial Canadian art collections.

Kleinburg was established in the mid-1800s as a mill town and resting place for stagecoach passengers traveling along the Humber River. In the 20th century, it became a retreat for people from Toronto wanting to escape bustling city life. Now, enjoy Kleinburg as a heritage town with great natural beauty and a thriving culture.

A walk down the main street reveals the town’s colonial architecture. One of Kleinburg’s most important attractions is the McMichael Canadian Art Collection. See art and sculptures by First Nations, Métis and Inuit people as well as works by artists such as A. J. Casson from the Group of Seven, one of Canada’s famous arts collectives. Enjoy the outdoors and walk along the winding trails of the sculpture garden and the McMichael Cemetery.

If you are an avid golfer, head to the Copper Creek Golf Club, ranked one of Ontario’s best courses. The club has its own restaurant where you can enjoy a meal overlooking the greens. Hike through forest on the Humber River Trails, a scenic area known to the Mohawk people as “the place where the trees grow over the water.”

Kleinburg is also home to the Kortright Centre. Here, learn about Ontario’s commitment to environmental conservation. Walk along the Power Trip Trail to see examples of energy and wastewater efficiency and sustainable building design. Reserve a spot at a sustainable technology workshop for a fun and educational vacation activity. Find details on the center’s website.

Participate in the lively atmosphere of the annual Binder Twine Festival every September, when the streets fill with food and craft stalls and live entertainment.

Kleinburg is located 40 minutes from downtown Toronto. While driving is the easiest way to get there, bus services are available as well.
