Riu Palace = Noise pollution.

Posted Jan 13, 2015
If you want a relaxing vacation this is not it. Everyday when we were relaxing on the beach the music started, the entertainment folks demanding you dance or participate in horseshoes, volleyball whatever. So we tried the pool - same thing. Water aerobics and the horrible repetitive music. Then at night - the show - which was fine but you had better plan on staying up til midnight due to the noise that travels to your room loud and clear. The food is average - also repetitive. Overall - just make another choice.

Great beach and wait staff

Cons: Mattresses, Sheets, remove mold in bathroom, more changes to the buffet day to day and a working elevator
Location: Not a lot to do near by. I would have liked more local shops and more events to attend.
The beach was great, the outside areas were spotless. The lobby was beautiful. Housekeeping was great. The wait staff overall was excellent. It was the nicest beach I have ever been on. No rocks, shells or trash. The sand was like soft powder. I would have liked more information about shuttles and trips from the hotel to outside places earlier in the trip. There was also an outside event one night in the sister Riu hotel that we only found out about trying to get to medical care. It had a lot of art, jewelry, cravings etc. I wished we had been informed about it. The hotel was very nice, but there was some mold on the bathroom ceiling and the elevator was broken 2 full days and our rooms were on the 3rd floor, so that was an issue. The beds were as hard as a rock and the sheets were either cheap or over bleached so they were ruff and scratchy. The Japanese restaurant was awful, the food was so bad we left. I would have liked more changes in the buffet menu day to day as there was a lot of repetitiveness. I wish they had more bathrooms outside of the rooms, lobby and spa and in only 1 of the 5 restaurants, if you were outside in the main entertainment area or at the other 4 restaurants or beach you had to walk pretty far to get to one. If I was given more information about shuttles etc and the elevator was not broken I would have given it a 4.5, add more changes to the buffet, clean up the bathroom mold and get better mattresses and sheets and it would have been a 5.0.

Nice beach and that's all

Posted Jan 10, 2015
Pros: the beach
Cons: Everything -- food, staff, activities
Location: beach was nice. Nice palm trees and sand. Fun things to do around: diving, day trips to Catalina island.
Went there for New Year with wife and another couple of friends. The environment in DR is nice and the beach is pleasant. The hotel though was disappointing. We were located in a part of the resort that was new - built/renovated in 2013. Rooms were ok (spacious and comfortable bed), not super clean and not very well maintained for this age. The staff was REALLY rude. The waiters at the restaurant for example was openly making fun of you when you were asking for something or sending back something if they were bringing something different you had asked for, the cleaning lady entered our room although there was the sign "Do Not Disturb" hanging on the door. Most of the staff DOES NOT speak or understand english, which should be a bare minimum when you work in that kind of industry and dealing mostly with foreigners as clients. The food was disgusting. If you were getting something customized and cooked in front of you (type omelette for breakfast, or fried rice, etc..) that was about ok, but forget the rest. Besides the hotel rooms, the infrastructures could not handle a full resort. The system of side restaurant is fun, but you need a reservation in order to have dinner there, and you could not book anything prior to your arrival. Once arrived, everything is booked for the next couple of days, so it takes some time to enter into the rotation. Same thing for the boats and kayaks on the beach. I ended up not being able to have a boat although I was there for 5 days!

Had a wonderful time with my family. The hotel staff where cordial and willing to help. We enjoyed the hotel activities such as dance lessons, aquatic exercises, dart games as well as the guided tours to Santo Domingo and the outback. Overall it was a great vacation.

near beach & shopping

Posted Jan 6, 2015
Pros: clean, nice staff
Cons: entertainment, food
Clean rooms, pretty beach (a lot of seaweed), close to local premium shopping. Food left a lot to be desired! I would recommend this hotel for shorter stays. As we ended up at the mall for a few meals. The staff was very courteous and helped us get a 'beach view'. Which as much as I have traveled, this is a extremely rare! However, I am glad that we did not pay additional over our jr. suite for the view. Reason being, the rooms do not have much view of the ocean. So, if you are wanting the all out beach views this would not be the place.

RIU Palace Punta Cana

Posted Jan 5, 2015
Pros: Loved the wait staff and service! Treated like a queen and king the whole stay!
Cons: Mattresses were very hard and bed just had a cover sheet and thin comforter. Bedding needs updating. Get rid pool entertainment/ just some music
Location: Nothing nearby to visit or walk to but everything you need is right there at resort.
My husband and I stayed for 6 days. Beach is beautiful and pool was very clean. Resort overall is wonderful. Such a variety of food is offered at buffet and 5 restaurants you can make a reservation are also available and look at the bar menu and pick the top shelf liquor or else the cheaper stuff would be used. I picked Jose Cuevo..my husband Canadian Club. Room had a musty smell from high humidity. Cleaning staff should leave an air freshener...bring one with you if you can. We had a suite not to be confused with a junior suite and it was very large and beautiful! Room 1126 looked at pool and a little bit of beach. Nightly entertainment in courtyard and shows also offered. Onsite Spa and small shops and their own excursion company on beach. All in all it was a wonderful vacation!
