Go for a stroll in this magnificent garden, which is home to more than 10,000 species of flowers, plants and trees.
The Garden of the Groves is one of the finest tropical gardens in the region, encompassing 12 acres (5 hectares) of waterfalls, fountains, duck ponds and lush greenery. Learn about the flora of the island during your visit and marvel at the variety of birds and pretty butterflies that are attracted by the garden’s many plants.
As you walk through the gardens, read interpretative signage that will help you identify the various plants and animals you spot. In addition to providing a habitat for diverse plants, turtles, iguanas and butterflies, the garden has become a refuge for injured birds. Look for Cliven, a red-tailed hawk who was famously saved by garden employees after being found tangled in a fishing line.
Check out the garden’s pretty chapel, perched on top of a hill. Wind through an interesting labyrinth inspired by the one at Chartres Cathedral in France. It is designed to serve as a site for walking meditation and spiritual renewal.
Stop to rest at the garden’s café and enjoy a meal while admiring a view of attractive waterfalls and ponds. Depending on the season, the café often offers dishes prepared using fruits from the garden’s own trees, including mangoes, cherries, bananas and avocados.
Take the kids to the garden’s petting zoo, where they can interact with pygmy goats and pot-belly pigs. The garden also features a wonderful cedar playset for younger visitors to enjoy.
Check out the garden’s shops, which are set in lovely cottages modeled after New England architecture. These shops sell a variety of handmade candles, jewelry, paintings and wood carvings. You may have the opportunity to chat with some of the local artists and artisans who made them.
The Garden of the Groves is open daily and has an admission fee. Explore the garden at your own pace or take a guided tour. Tours are available Monday to Saturday. Located a 15-minute drive from downtown Freeport, the garden is best reached by car or as part of a guided tour.
