Experience the exciting worlds of horses and horseracing at this equine theme park with multiple museums in the middle of Kentucky’s horse country.

Visit the Kentucky Horse Park to learn about one of America’s favorite sports and actually meet some of its celebrated competitors. The Hall of Champions introduces retired winners of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stake and other major races.

Watch the Parade of Breeds Show where riders guide five or six horses around a paddock, with an opportunity for guests to pet the animals and ask questions. Breeds may include speedy Arabians and hard-working Clydesdales.

Step into the International Museum of the Horse, a 60,000-square-foot (5,575-square-meter) exhibition space revealing the chronological story of human and horses. Exhibits start with the early days of working farm horses to modern sleek thoroughbreds and show horses that have won major international races and jumping competitions. See specialized working horses in the Draft Horse Barn and Mounted Police Barn.

Tour the American Saddlebred Museum for details on the evolution of horse-related activities, trophies for state shows and life-size statues of famous horses. The Al-Marah Arabian Horse Galleries explains the history of this noble breed, with multimedia and interactive experiences especially geared for younger visitors.

For hands-on experiences, reserve a horseback trail ride or kids pony ride. You can also stay at one of 260 campsites ranging from primitive tent sites to paved RV hookups, with access to a pool, tennis court, playgrounds and the Legacy Trail. As you bicycle toward the city along this 12-mile (19-kilometer) paved pathway, you’ll pass horse farms and a pretty creek.

Check daily schedules to ensure you see the horses you’re most interested in. During the main season from early May to early November, you’ll meet draft horses, learn facts about the museum and see live shows of champion horses and various breeds. In winter, stall-side chats include activities at the Breeds Barn and Hall of Champions.

Admission varies by season, with lower rates in spring and winter. Ask for discounts for seniors, children and active and veteran military personnel. On-site parking has a separate fee. Drive north from the center of Lexington to get to the Kentucky Horse Park in about 15 minutes.
