A coastal landscape with rocky cliffs, a clear blue sea, and distant mountains.
Quaint teahouses and temples recall Taiwanese traditions in a district known for its gold and coal mining and a town ruled by cats.

Visit Ruifang, a vast district packed with historic towns and a history entwined with gold mines and foreign dynasties. Between urban hubs lie spectacular natural sights, with extensive walking trails meandering through scenic terrain. Consider how the district’s towns have developed around a mining trade and culture.

Jiufen Old Street provides insights into Taiwanese traditions in its namesake village. Browse the many shops and stalls, stopping for a meal at one of the cafés or restaurants. Sip a hot beverage from a charming teahouse and try the sweet potato boiled soup. Learn about a popular local activity in the Jiufen Kite Museum and stop at the Jiufen Visitor Center by the police station for advice about daytrips and any events taking place.

Visit the neighboring town of Jinguashi for the Jinguashi Shrine, the Jinguashi Geopark and the Teapot Mountain Trail. Drive south for just 4 miles (6 kilometers) to reach the Houtong Cat Village. Furry felines seem to rule this quaint town, with its cafés and shops catering to them. Stroll along the river and purchase cat-related souvenirs from the many stores.

For a change of scenery, view the dramatic surrounding landscape. Admire the bright glow of the Golden Waterfall and reach the coast for the Yin Yang Sea, whose swirling golden hues from sediments in the river dance with the blue of the bay.

The Ruifang district is at the northeastern corner of Taiwan, a little east of Taipei and Keelung City. Bordering the region are the Xinyi District, the Nuannuan District and the Zhongzheng District. Arrive at Taipei Songshan Airport and take a bus east to the Ruifang Train Station. While you’re in the area, travel to see other sights such as Heping Island Park, Lover’s Lake Park and the Shifen Old Street.

A colorful sea and a rich mining history set Ruifang apart from other districts.
