Aurelio

Rome

A city street lined with parked cars and trees, leading to a large dome-shaped building in the distance.
A city street with a taxi and bus lane, a bridge, and buildings.
A large domed building with a smaller dome in the foreground, surrounded by a densely populated cityscape and distant mountains.
A large domed building with classical architecture, surrounded by trees and residential buildings.
St. Peter's Basilica with its large dome and classical architecture.

Stay in this peaceful neighborhood, which still retains much of its authentic charm despite touching the edges of Rome’s biggest attraction, Vatican City.

The neighborhood of Aurelio is a good choice if you are looking for somewhere affordable and authentic to stay in Rome. As a mostly residential area, it is populated by families, senior citizens and young professionals. Join them in the evenings as they gather in restaurants and cafés that open out onto the sidewalk. And when you feel like stepping into the more touristic side of the city, Vatican City is right next door, bordering the neighborhood.

Spend a few hours discovering the highlights of Aurelio at your own pace. As well as peaceful cafés and restaurants, the neighborhood is home to a few green spaces that offer good locations for some reading in the sun.

Make your way to the lovely park Villa Abamelek, the largest green space. Stop by the appealing attractions located within the park’s boundaries, such as the stunning Chapel Pamphili, the spectacular Villino Algardi museum, scenic Belvedere Lake and the peaceful San Pancrazio church.

Directly to the northeast of the neighborhood is Vatican City, where you will find some of Rome’s most famous sights. These include the Vatican Museums, St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel, with its world-renowned 16th-century ceiling paintings by Michelangelo. Outside, in St. Peter’s Square, the crowds of tourist grow steadily throughout the day. But when you feel like escaping the hubbub, the tranquil neighborhood of Aurelio is just minutes away.

Pay a visit to Aurelio at any time of year. The attractions here and in Vatican City are open in every season. Consider it as an alternative place to stay, offering better value for money than some of the more central Roman neighborhoods. Enjoy the experience of watching everyday Italian families going about their daily routines.
