Away from the hustle and bustle, flashing neon lights and dinging slot machines, the Southern Nevada Zoo—known locally as the Las Vegas Zoo—provides an oasis of calm. It is the perfect place for a day out for families or visitors looking for an alternative side to Las Vegas, providing an interesting, educational experience and the opportunity to see some of the world’s most exotic creatures close up.
Although small, this site is home to more than 150 species of animals and plants. Surrounded by foliage, the zoo feels like it’s in another world away from the bright lights of the city. And, because of its smaller size, the zoo’s staff are able to provide more attention to the animals and are always on hand to provide visitors with the information they need.
The site has been specially designed so that each species feels as at home as possible. So you will have a chance to experience the prairies, savannahs and rainforests of the world, and the magnificent creatures that inhabit them, from endangered cats like African lions, cougars and Eurasian lynxes, to colourful birds including pink Chilean flamingos, talking parrots and macaws, as well as ostriches and emus, and even a lively family of Barbary apes—the last in the United States. You’ll also find more unusual creatures, such as fossas (Madagascar’s largest carnivore), wallabies, pythons and boa constrictors.
Take a hands-on approach and try feeding the local birds that wander freely through the park—seed is available for purchase at the park’s entrance. Cute pygmy goats and chickens can also be hand fed.
As well as the zoological park, the site contains a colourful exhibit from the Las Vegas Gem Club, featuring natural stones and crystals extracted from the earth, and a botanical display on endangered plant species and rare types of bamboo.
Run as a non-profit organisation, the zoo’s mission is to educate visitors, and especially children, about the world’s endangered species and the importance of preserving their habitats. If your experience at the zoo inspires you to help its mission, check out its Adopt an Animal programme, which helps to fund maintenance and healthcare.
The zoo is only a 15-minute drive from the Vegas Strip, and is open all year round, from 9 am daily. Tickets can be purchased on the gates; discounts are available for children and large groups. Remember your hat and sun cream in the summer months, a time when many of the animals stay indoors in an attempt to avoid the blistering heat.
