Paddington
Discover chic café culture, engaging contemporary art and the best of high fashion in the leafy streets of this elegant inner-city neighborhood.

In little over a century, Paddington has transformed from a dense working-class quarter into perhaps Sydney’s classiest shopping district. Visit Paddington, or “Paddo” as the locals call it, to walk its tree-lined streets exploring fashion boutiques, contemporary art galleries and hole-in-the-wall cafés serving healthy treats.

Experience the high life, Sydney-style, at one of Australia’s most desirable high-end retail strips, The Intersection. Browse the offerings of prestigious fashion brands or discover collections from up-and-coming new designers. Admire rows of terrace houses, previously homes for Victorian-era workers, now elegantly renovated to host boutiques, cafés and art galleries.

Paddington may have lost its edge to gentrification, but it remains an important center for Sydney’s art scene. Encounter works by both emerging and established artists at the Olsen Gallery or explore the diverse exhibitions of modern and contemporary work at the Wagner Contemporary. Visit the non-profit Sherman Contemporary Arts Foundation to see fine contemporary works by prominent artists from Australia, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and beyond.

For a different glimpse of local creative life, stop at the lively Paddington Markets, held on Saturdays. These not-for-profit community-run markets are held on the grounds of the local Uniting Church and public school. Browse art, jewelry and design from emerging creators or sample handmade chocolate and bread while listening to live music.

Afterward, walk down bustling Oxford Street, the traditional home of Sydney’s LGBTQI community.

Take a guided tour of the Victoria Barracks, one of Australia’s finest examples of military architecture. Bring a picnic to the Paddington Reservoir Gardens, an award-winning public park that expertly incorporates brickwork and timber from an abandoned water reservoir.

Paddington is located in the inner east side of Sydney. Most attractions are easily accessible on foot. Travel by bus from Central Station or Hyde Park for 20 minutes to arrive on Oxford Street or take a taxi. Parking tends to be limited.

Celebrate Paddington’s past and present with a burger and craft beer at one of its many refurbished historic pubs.

Location was good, walking distance to just about everything, especially the light rail in George Street. Traffic noise during night but that is expected in a big city. Housekeeping did a great job daily. The only negative was, no toaster and limited cooking utensils. Overall I would stay again.
