A desert landscape with large, weathered logs and sparse vegetation.
Snow-capped peaks and lakes skirted by pine forests make a surprising contrast to the arid deserts and cactus fields of Arizona.

A dramatic range of peaks and valleys, the White Mountains offer all sorts of outdoor activity and recreational opportunities. Huge swaths of ponderosa pine trees adorn the bumpy topography of the region, which is intertwined with countless nature trails. Discover the extraordinary beauty of this set of mountains by hiking up and down on forest paths.

Try your hand at fishing in some of the 50 lakes and streams that crisscross through the valleys. You’ll find many different kinds of trout, including rainbow and cutthroat. Catch and release the rare Apache trout that is native to the region.

Visit large Hawley Lake and take a canoe, kayak or sailboat out on the water. Appreciate the mild summer weather and feel the breeze on your face.

In winter, admire the twinkling white glow of the snow. Go skiing or snowboarding at Sunrise Park Resort, which has a children’s ski area and an elegant lodge. Enjoy sleigh rides near the base of the mountain. Go horseback riding and rent a boat to venture out on Sunrise Lake in warmer weather.

Take the time to learn about Apache history and traditions in Fort Apache Historic Park. Its museum has all types of temporary art exhibits. Explore the crumbling walls and corridors of the nearby Kinishba Ruins, thought to have been constructed between the 13th and 14th centuries.

The mountains cover the Colorado Plateau on the eastern side of Arizona, running from the center of the state east toward the New Mexican border. Reach the foot of the mountains by driving east from Phoenix for about 4 hours, passing through Tonto National Forest and Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. Continue east to see nearby sights such as Gila National Forest and Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge.

Enjoy an eclectic vacation destination in the White Mountains, combining snowy climbs and beautiful nature trails with the rich culture of the Apache people.

"It is definitely more like motel 6 or super 8 in the elegance of a place. The jetted tub in room was nice. The room smelled like someone had smoked in it. The bathroom door squeaked like it needed wd40. No one was at front desk to ask any questions to, one had to call for assistance. The pool wasn't ..."

"I booked GreenTree for the elevator since my disabled daughter was attending a nearby special needs camp. Via Hotels.com, I got a room two steps from the lobby, across from the kitchen. "The room was clean. Parking is very restricted, do not bring a trailer. Shower facility was less than stellar. A large person would be very uncomfortable. I never saw wood being used as the sides of the shower. Hallway to bathroom very narrow. No overhead fan, therefore room was stuffy at night. ..."
