Visit Ahuriri Flat for a spectacular area of rugged coastline marking the southeastern corner of the South Island. It is known for its iconic clifftop lighthouse and range of majestic wildlife, including dolphins and seals. Hike along the picturesque shore to appreciate the awe-inspiring views of the Pacific Ocean.
Stroll along Kākā Point Beach at the northern end of the strip and enjoy snacks and drinks from the restaurant. Stay at the motor camp at the beach’s rear and go on a trek through the dense exotic vegetation of the Kākā Point Scenic Reserve. Bring your binoculars to see wood pigeons, silvereyes and tui birds, which are common in New Zealand.
Drive south along the oceanside route, passing Willsher Bay and Short Bay. You’ll soon reach one of the area’s highlights, Nugget Point headland. Hike uphill to the Nugget Point Lighthouse at the steep promontory’s summit. From the lighthouse, appreciate stunning views of the various rock formations that rise from the ocean and form a circle.
See these jagged rocks up close by taking a boat trip with a tour operator. Spot penguins and seals on the rocks of Roaring Bay, at the southern end of the headland. A little farther south is secluded Cannibal Bay Beach, at the end of hilly fields and a Monterey cypress forest. Watch sea lions basking on the rocks on sunny days.
From Kākā Point down to the mouth of the Catlins River, this district occupies the southeastern corner of the South Island of New Zealand. From the nearby town of Dunedin, drive south for 60 miles (100 kilometers) to arrive here in a little more than 1 hour. Continue travelling along the shore to reach other attractions such as Purakaunui Falls, McLean Falls and the Cathedral Cave.
