Atami Castle featuring a bay or harbor, landscape views and a city
Choose one or more items to build your trip:
This cliff-top replica castle was built in the 1950s as an homage to Japanese castles. Visit its museum documenting their history and traditions.

Atami Castle is one of the jewels of the city, with its great curved tiers spreading out above Sagami Bay. This structure is unlike most Japanese castles, in that it is more of a modern museum, a tribute to castles. It was built in 1959, long after the Edo Period. Climb to this mountaintop gem and head inside to learn about all types of Japanese customs.

As you arrive, gaze up at the multiple tiers that seem to stretch from the sides toward the sky. The front conveys the typical characteristics of historic Japanese castle façades. Enter and stroll through the exhibit on the history of the country’s castles to get an understanding of the tradition and architectural aesthetics.

Bring your family to this museum and dress up in old-world attire from the Edo Period. You can also try to solve complex Japanese riddles. The compound has a game area that the kids will love, while the adjacent Ukiyo-e exhibit includes an erotic theme just for adults.

Climb to the observation deck on the top floor of the castle for scenic views of the bay and the city of Atami down below. The structure is perched at the top of a cliff, roughly 330 feet (100 meters) above sea level. Outside, wander through the gardens and take photographs of the pink blossoms of cherry trees, which are in full bloom at the end of March and beginning of April. Attend one of the varied events held throughout the year, some featuring firework displays.

Atami Castle overlooks Sagami Bay in the eastern cape that juts out of Atami. From the city center, walk southeast for 2 miles (3.5 kilometers) to get here in less than 1 hour. Explore the surrounding area to visit other nearby treasures such as the Akao Herb and Rose Garden, the MIYABI shops and the Marine Spa Atami.
