Watch jockeys ride thoroughbred horses around the world’s oldest operating racecourse, attend a polo match and dine at varied restaurants.

Join the racegoers that dress up, sip champagne and place bets on horse races while visiting Chester Racecourse. Established in 1539, Chester Racecourse is the proud recipient of a Guinness World Record award for being the oldest still-operating course in the world. Curiously, the ground on which Chester Racecourse stands was once an island and important Roman harbor. Today it attracts thousands of spectators, who come to enjoy some of England’s most prestigious races.

The racing calendar runs from from May to September. Choose between family-friendly meetings and major events in the British racing calendar, such as July’s City Plate Day. See the runners in the parade ring and then cheer for your horse and jockey as they gallop around the 1.1-mile (1.8-kilometer) long track. Victorious riders return to the parade ring to celebrate the success with their horse and trainer.

There’s plenty of other things to see and do during a racing event. Musicians and street performers entertain crowds in both the grandstand and infield. Bring your own food and set up a picnic in the Open Course areas. Barbecues are also permitted in designated sections. Behind-the-scenes guided tours are available on race days.

If your visit to Chester doesn’t coincide with a racing event then check the calendar to see what else is on. Watch Chester Polo Club in action in July and September. Other activities range from food and drink festivals to comic cons and vintage fairs.

Restaurants at the venue open year round. Dine on contemporary twists on classic British meals while enjoying uninterrupted views of the racetrack. A traditional English pub has a gastropub-style menu, a wide selection of real ales and a nautical-themed children’s play area.

The racecourse is just a 10-minute walk from Chester city center and just over a mile from Chester train station. Drivers can park for a fee in the on-site lot.

Book tickets for Chester Racecourse via the venue’s official website or at the box office. The box office is open from Monday to Friday and on event days.
