Check out the hilly hinterland town and explore the white-sand beaches that form a necklace along the edge of a peninsula on Antigua’s eastern coast.

Spread across the southern half of a promontory jutting into the North Atlantic Ocean, Freetown has some of Antigua’s finest ocean views. The town’s rugged coastline is etched with luminous white-sand coves, while the hinterland has forested hills. Explore the cozy community nestled within the hummocks or make your way to the coast and go sailing, swimming or snorkeling at a series of exceptional beaches.

Wander around the neighborhoods within the peninsula’s forested interior. Bring the kids to meet amazing creatures inhabiting Antigua and Barbuda at the Wadadli Animal Nature Park west of town. See monkeys, parrots and reptiles, as well as a range of native plants, including bromeliads. You’ll also see exotic animals, such as the showy peacocks that roam the grounds.

For ocean adventures, go to Half Moon Bay BeachOpens in a new window. This pretty little crescent-shaped beach is protected by two curving headlands and is the perfect spot to cool off. Play in the waves or grab your mask and snorkel and explore the reefs offshore. The beachside bar has a range of snacks. Alternatively, bring your own picnic to enjoy on a blanket on the sand. If there’s a breeze, try windsurfing or kitesurfing along the coast.

Continue northeast to find the next dazzling cove, Exchange Bay. From here, you can look out to Smith Island or check out the views from Friars Head. Return in the early morning to see magnificent sunrise views across the North Atlantic.

Freetown is located in Saint Philip Parish on an eastern Antigua peninsula. It is between Nonsuch Bay to the north and Willoughby Bay to the south. The town is a 40-minute drive from St. John’s. Taxis and rental cars are available in Freetown, making travel in this pretty part of the island easy. Stay in a waterfront resort in Half Moon Bay and enjoy the pristine white beaches on your doorstep.
