From tours of a castle and churches, to golf, watersports and excursions in lush green countryside, this Danish town has varied attractions for all ages.

Haderslev is a charming town set between a glistening strait, beaches, forests and the rolling countryside of Syddanmark. Discover a wealth of historic buildings, cultural centers and museums. Haderslev also presents the opportunity to go skateboarding, explore picturesque waterways, play golf and experience Danish winemaking traditions.

The town dates back to the 1100s, when merchants traveled from afar to sell their wares at a local market. Today commerce continues to dominate the cobblestone streets of Haderslev Old Town. Admire old religious monuments such as the gothic-style Haderslev Cathedral and whitewashed Old Haderslev Church. Learn about the town’s history at the Ehlers Collection, Von Oberberg’s House and Schleswig Carriage Collection.

Arrive in the Old Town to see watchmen in 18th-century uniforms. The guards have protected the town since the 1300s and offer night tours from June to September. Visit the Night Watchmen’s Museum to learn more about their work.

For something more active bring your BMX bike, inline skates or skateboard to the StreetDome. On the quieter side, relax at the waterfront gardens of Haderslev Dampark and take home some herbs. Join a guided tour of the medieval Gram Castle and prepare to be spooked on an after-dark ghost tour of its basement and attic.

The 9-mile-long (15-kilometer) Haderslev Fjord stretches east to Little Belt strait. Stroll along the banks of the fjord and cruise the gentle waters aboard the M/S Helene boat. Visit the island of Årø, which once belonged to Germany. Traverse the island by foot and bike, tee off at Årø Park Golf and sip locally produced wines at Årø Vingård.

Located on the southeast coast of Denmark’s Jutland Peninsula, Haderslev is a 1-hour drive from Billund Airport. Copenhagen Airport is less than a 3-hour journey by car. Travel deeper into the spectacular Jutland landscapes via Naessets Camino, a walking route roughly 60 miles (100 kilometers) long that connects nine pretty churches.
