Within the grounds of the sacred Kasuga Taisha Shrine is a pretty garden inspired by the plants mentioned in a classic Japanese poetry anthology.

Experience a soothing tranquility and marvel at an array of fascinating plant species while visiting the Manyo Botanical Garden. Manyo Botanical Garden is a themed garden based on a 1,300-year-old anthology called Man’yōshū, which translates to Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves. Wander between plants referenced in the poem and enjoy their aromas and colors. Attend an annual celebration of classical music and dance.

Stepping inside the garden feels like being transported to an ancient land of calm and enchantment. Paths weave around gardens decorated with intriguing trees, lush foliage and gorgeous flowering plants. Discover more than 300 different species from the acclaimed collection. Each has a label that provides the plant’s name and the specific poems in which it appears.

Marvel at the vivid white, violet and pink hues of the wisteria, which blossom in May and sway gently in the breeze. The wisteria is symbolic to the Fujiwara clan, an influential political power during the Asuka and Nara periods. See camellias, clematises and irises and a display of grain plants. Spot koi and turtles swimming in the pond and watch as birds flutter between the trees.

As you meander through the garden you’ll find peaceful corners perfect for taking breaks and collecting your thoughts. Sip tea and snack on Japanese fare in the courtyard of the teahouse. In November the garden hosts the annual Manyo Gagaku Performance Festival. Musicians and dancers appear on a floating stage to perform gagaku, a form of classical court music that originated in the 10th century.

The garden is one of the many attractions in Nara Park. Get here by taking a bus from JR Nara Station to the Kasuga Taisha Shrine stop in about 15 minutes and then walking for less than 10 minutes. Parking is possible close to the entrance and also near the shrine.

Manyo Botanical Garden is open daily from March to October. From November to February the garden is closed on Mondays. There is an admission fee, with discounts for children.
