Stroll through streets of traditional alpine houses in San Candido and admire a stunning church that dates back to the 8th century. Speed down Italy’s longest bobsled ride or immerse yourself in a warm swimming pool.

Just south of the Austrian border, set against a backdrop of lush meadows and snow-capped peaks, San Candido is one of Italy’s most naturally beautiful towns. Year-round, you will always find a friendly crowd of residents and many enjoyable activities.

Uncover years of local history at the Monastery Museum. Inside a beautiful white church in the heart of town, seven rooms hold a collection of old manuscripts and exquisite paintings by local artists.

As you wander around the town, look to the south at the colossal figure of Haunold. Standing 2,221 feet (677 meters) tall, this mountain is a base for a range of excursions and sports. Shoot down the 2-mile (3-kilometer) summer toboggan run before you attempt the giant Fun-Bob Ride.

A slower way of seeing this incredible area is by setting off along more than 43 miles (70 kilometers) of hiking trails surrounding the town. Walk along paths through thick spruce forests and marvel at spectacular views.

When it’s time to relax, head to Acquafun at the east end of town. Soak in the Jacuzzi or bask under the sun in the outdoor pool.

During the winter the town cools down and the focus turns to snow sports. Ski and snowboard on the slopes of Haunold Mountain or try snowshoeing on the Dolomiti Nordic Ski trail. Come in January when artisans from around the world gather for the International Snow Sculpture Festival.
