Travel Guide

A grand historic building with formal gardens, including trimmed hedges and statues.
A courtyard with stone buildings, a wooden gazebo, and outdoor seating.
An opulent room with red walls, gold-framed paintings, and ornate furniture.
A historic kitchen with copper cookware, wooden cabinets, and a large arched window.
A park with a lake, picnic area, and walking paths.

Hike along the paths of the estate, take a sailing trip on its lake or stay overnight at a historic coaching inn in this family-friendly settlement.

Centered on a majestic mansion, Harewood is a wealthy Yorkshire hamlet with a slow pace of life. Its village hall, post office and community setting provide insights into a typical old-world English village. Stroll through the scenic parks and breathe in the fresh country air in this quiet escape.

Arrive in the heart of the village and walk along the main street. Try the fish and chips and sip beers at the Harewood Arms pub, a historic coaching inn dating back to the early 19th century. You can also stay overnight in the rooms of this preserved building.

Just across the street from the inn is the entrance to the village’s highlight, the Harewood House. Embark on a tour of the grandiose villa’s state rooms and corridors. Relax with drinks and snacks in the Terrace Café and browse the items available in the Useful/Beautiful Shop.

Explore the vast and leafy surrounding grounds and gardens and bring your kids to frolic in the playground. The whole family will enjoy the Bird Garden and Farm Experience. On the weekend, climb aboard The Capability boat for a sailing tour of the house’s lake.

Back on land, amble along the Lakeside Path and study the floral displays in the Walled Garden. Head into the 18th-century Stables Courtyard to find the Shop at Harewood, which is packed full of souvenirs and jewelry. Examine the preserved façade of the 15th-century All Saints Church. Although it is no longer fully active, music concerts, family events and memorials occasionally take place here.

The neighborhood is on the way to Harrogate, in the northern outskirts of Leeds. Ride a bus from the Leeds City Bus Station to get here in about 30 minutes. On the way, stop off at other attractions including the Roundhay Park, the York Gate Garden and the Moor Allerton Golf Club.
