Ancient Greek and Roman ruins, beautiful religious landmarks and a bustling maze-like street market sit in the shadow of the emblematic Acropolis.

Monastiraki is an energetic neighborhood where the old and new of Athens blend in perfect harmony. See the old while walking in the footsteps of emperors at temples and churches. Monastiraki means Little Monastery, a reference to a cloistered complex that once stood here. Today, a colorful flea market has taken the place of the monastic buildings.

Make your way to Monastiraki Square, a popular social gathering point and great place for people watching. On the square, the 10th-century Church of Pantanassa is the last remaining structure of the monastic site. From the square, follow lanes and alleys into the heart of the Monastiraki Flea Market. Browse antique shops at Avissinia Square and shop for handicrafts, jewelry, souvenirs and vintage clothing.

Iconic ruins stand at the northern base of the Acropolis. Among them are the one-time market square, called the Roman Agora, and the Tower of Winds weather station. Peruse dozens of Athenian objects at the Stoa of Attalos, which features an elegant rebuilt colonnade. Don’t miss Hadrian’s Library and the Library of Pantainos.

Eye-catching churches dominate squares and go almost unnoticed on street corners. Study Byzantine designs at the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and neoclassical elements at the Church of Saint Eirini. King Otto and Queen Amalia, Greece’s ruling couple in the 19th century, placed the first stone of the Metropolitan Church of Athens.

For more shopping, find art dealers, jewelers and gift stores at Pandrossou Street Market. Take time out at one of the neighborhoods many bars, cafés and taverns. Order typical Greek dishes such as a gyro kebab and tiropita (phyllo pastry cheese pies). The neighboring Psirri district is packed with coffeehouses, meze restaurants, late-night bars and live music venues.

Reach Monastiraki by taking the metro to the Monastiraki stop, located on the neighborhood’s main square. Once here, the most enjoyable way to get around is on foot. Village-like Plaka and upscale Kolonaki are both within comfortable walking distance.

"This is a good hotel within walking distance to all the main attractions and metro lines! We loved the location, the staff was friendly and the hotel was clean. If you have a room on the main floor, it can be quite loud because some rooms are off the lobby. We would stay here again!"
