Admire looming peaks from the banks of this rock-hewn reservoir, spot majestic bird species and hike trails to an ancient cave inhabited by hibernating bats.

Bear Gulch Reservoir is nestled amid the dramatic landscapes of Pinnacles National Park. Reached via meandering trails, Bear Gulch Reservoir is a paradise for both families and experienced hikers. Be awed by the views of high peaks and monoliths while sitting on the shores of this placid body of water. Bring food and enjoy a picnic surrounded by the natural beauty and varied wildlife of the national park.

Begin your journey to the reservoir at the Bear Gulch Nature Center. Here you can ask about the park’s various trails and accessibility. Take your time and appreciate the chaparral and woodland through which the natural pathways pass. Gaze up at grandiose geological formations that were formed by the movement of tectonic plates millions of years ago.

Interestingly shaped boulders and huge rock walls frame the reservoir. Marvel as they reflect like mirror images in the still and shimmering waters on sunny days. The reservoir’s rocky shoreline is ideal for resting on, picnicking and appreciating the wonders of nature. Keep watch for dragonflies, frogs and birds such as the Californian condor, golden eagles and peregrine falcons.

On your way to and from the reservoir, visit the park’s talus caves, which are openings between piles of fallen boulders,. Among the most enchanting is the Bear Gulch Cave, accessible via the eponymous Bear Gulch Cave Trail. It’s home to a colony of breeding Townsend’s big-eared bats.

Adventurous visitors can follow challenging trails that lead from the reservoir. Chalone Peak Trail travels south to the park’s highest point, North Chalone Peak, and uninterrupted views of the enveloping valleys. Climb through grasslands and wildflower meadows into the High Peaks via the Rim Trail and High Peaks Trail.

Bear Gulch Reservoir and Pinnacles National Park are open year round and there’s an admission fee. Parking is available at the Pinnacles Visitor Center and the Bear Gulch Day Use Area. Ask at the visitor center or check the park’s official website for information about the opening times of Bear Gulch Cave.
