Visit the medieval castles, churches, squares and taverns of this quaint town surrounded by the striking landscapes of the Rhine Gorge.

Braubach is a storybook town at the heart of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. It sits between the eastern banks of the Rhine River and the countryside of forest-covered hills and vineyards. Discover the medieval flair of Braubach while sauntering along its easygoing streets. Marvel at architectural masterpieces and experience the welcoming charm of centuries-old taverns.

One of Braubach’s major highlights is Marksburg CastleOpens in a new window, a 14th-century fortress on a hilltop overlooking the town center. Explore the batteries, chapel, living quarters and vaults on a guided tour. Enjoy panoramic views from the castle ramparts. Tours in English operate in the summer months. English-language fact sheets are available during the rest of the year.

Go to Marktplatz, the central square framed by half-timbered houses and café terraces. Nearby, stop at Winery Willems for a tasting of traditional Braubacher wines. See historic landmarks such as the 16th-century Phillipsburg Castle, the Obertor gate tower and the Kriegerdenkmal tower war memorial. Find displays of agricultural tools and ceramics from the Westerwald region at Bauernmuseum. Also exhibited here is artwork by Karl Heidelbach, who was once a student of the acclaimed painter Otto Dix.

Visit the town’s ancient and beautifully preserved churches. St. Barbara’s Church is now a community center. The 11th-century Martinskappelle, the town’s oldest church, stands between Marksburg Castle and Marktplatz. It shelters the tomb of Heinrich Schlusnus, a famous opera singer born in Braubach in 1888.

Appreciate the stunning Upper Middle Rhine Valley scenery with a walk along the riverbank and relax at riverside parks. Sample riesling, pinot noir and other wines produced at Rhine Valley wineries at the town’s bars. Eckfritz is an atmospheric inn and tavern little changed since it opened in 1597.

We didn’t explore much of the town because of time constraints. We caught one of the boat tours which had a stop situated about 80m away. Really convenient place to stay to explore Braubach or other parts of the Rhine in that region.
