English Riviera

Travel Guide

A waterfront promenade with people walking, a row of colorful buildings, and boats docked in the water.
A thatched-roof house surrounded by lush greenery and a brick staircase.
A church surrounded by lush greenery and a tall tower.
A large indoor auditorium with red seats, wooden paneling, and a stage.
A stadium with yellow and blue seats, a covered roof, and various advertisements.
Lush vegetation and resorts along the picturesque waterfront brought Victorians to this sunny destination now known for John Cleese and Agatha Christie.

The English Riviera includes a range of scenic towns and villages gracing Devon’s southern coastline. Its palm trees, beaches and resorts stretch across 22 miles (35 kilometers) of stunning terrain, where you can swim in calm water. Spend your vacation discovering the charming delights of one of Britain’s sunniest parts.

In the northern part of the region, visit Torquay Harbour and the Living Coasts zoo and aquarium. The town of Torquay was made famous by, among other things, a TV series called Fawlty Towers featuring Monty Python actor and comedian John Cleese. Relax near the fountain and colorful flowers in the Cary (Torquay) Gardens and try your luck in the Genting Casino.

Embark on the Agatha Christie Literary Trail to learn more about the places in her novels. Delve into the Kents Cavern Prehistoric Caves system for a glimpse of fascinating geological features.

Just a 30-minute walk north from central Torquay is the quaint village of Babbacombe. Bring your kids to the Babbacombe Model Village. Head out to the Babbacombe Theatre and visit the old-world pubs in the neighborhood.

Head south along the coast, stopping off to sunbathe at Preston Sands and having fun at the entertainment complex on the Victorian Paignton Pier. The little ones will love Pirates Bay Adventure Golf and adults can practice their swing at Cayman Golf or Dartmouth Golf and Country Club.

As you reach the River Dart, you’ll see the fort and castles of Historic Dartmouth. Ride around the area in style aboard the Dartmouth Steam Railway.

The region comprises the coastal part of the borough of Torbay in southwestern England. From nearby Plymouth, drive east for 30 miles (50 kilometers) to get here in roughly 1 hour. Explore the surrounding region for other highlights such as Dartmouth, Exmouth and the Dartmoor National Park.

The English Riviera complements its rich Victorian history with sprawling beaches and parks.
