Hike around Hokkaido’s tallest peak, discover glorious parks and attend an ice sculpture festival in the stunning “Town of Photography.”

For a jaw-dropping location between rivers, lush green countryside and snowcapped mountain peaks, visit Higashikawa. With picture-perfect scenery luring photographers and nature lovers from afar, the town declared itself the Town of Photography in the 1980s. Uncover the beauty of Higashikawa while partaking in one of many outdoor pursuits. Get acquainted with the work of local artists, indulge in Japanese traditions and enjoy eclectic festivals.

The 16 peaks of Daisetsuzan National Park rise above the town and present many opportunities for alpine adventures. Ride the Asahidake Ropeway to the base of Asahidake Mountain, where trails take you past crater lakes, wildflower fields and steaming volcanic peaks. Powder hounds can explore some of Hokkaido’s best backcountry skiing terrain. Carve up the slopes of Canmore Ski Village or go rafting on the Chubetsu River.

At the foot of Asahidake, Tenninkyo Onsen hot springs village sits amid the verdant valley and waterfalls of Tenninkyo Gorges. Follow a short trail to 886-feet (270-meter) tall Hagoromo Falls and soak your feet in the Heavenly Woman's Footbath.

In the easy-going town center, cozy cafés, ramen restaurants and sushi bars serve up authentic Japanese flavors. Find time to relax at town parks such as Fureai Green Park and the riverside Higashikagura Forest Park. At Kitoushi Forest Park the appearance of the pink flowers of cherry blossom trees marks the arrival of spring. Hike a winding trail to the hilltop lookouts, spot wildflowers and dozens of bird species, and play a round of golf.

Year-round festivals showcase the town’s friendly community spirit. In January, Higashikawa Kori Matsuri has fireworks displays, snow games and an ice sculpture competition. Admire the work of regional photographers at July’s Higashikawa International Photo Festival. Shop for arts, crafts and local produce at the Kurashi Tanoshiku Festival, held in May and September.

Higashikawa is a 30-minute drive from Asahikawa. The most convenient way to travel here and around is by rented car. Maps and a travel guide are available to download from the town’s official tourism website.

A secluded little village, almost European feel to it. We rented bicycles at the visitor center and rode around the town. Daisetsuzan and Asahidake and Higashikawa would have been impossible for us without a car, so we rented one from Asahidake.
