Castlefield

Manchester

A canal with a wooden walkway on one side and a modern building with balconies on the other.
A street at dusk with a prominent 'MOSI' sign, streetlights, and a historic building with arched windows.
A historic building with a sign for the Museum of Science & Industry.
A historical site with a red tower, a bridge, and a modern skyscraper in the background.
A narrowboat named "Emmeline Pankhurst" docked under a brick arch bridge.
An enchanting district along the canal traces the city’s Roman and industrial heritage, while numerous bars and clubs stand between the arches.

Visit Castlefield, one of Manchester’s architectural highlights, with its series of canals and historic waterfront buildings. Leafy parks and classic entertainment venues make this conservation area an entertaining destination, no matter the weather. Stroll along the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal and view the picturesque setting in the heart of the city.

The waterway runs for 36 miles (58 kilometers) and links the city to the River Mersey and the Irish Sea. As you walk beside the canal, consider the area’s rich history, which dates back to Roman times. See evidence of this intriguing past in the form of the Castlefield Roman Fort of Mamucium, whose ruined walls and reconstructed gateway grace the green grounds of Castlefield Urban Heritage Park. For a change of scene, watch some of the world’s biggest bands on the stage of the Castlefield Bowl, a large open-air pavilion with a capacity for 8,000 spectators.

The district also has an eclectic range of indoor activities. Browse intriguing art exhibits in the Castlefield Gallery, which focuses on contemporary visual arts. Learn about some of Manchester’s greatest feats in the Science and Industry Museum and attend a Broadway-style musical, concert, ballet or stand-up comedy at the Manchester Opera House.

As evening falls, head to the Deansgate Locks, where bars and nightclubs fit snuggly between the arches along the canal. The fashionable district has a wealth of entertainment, including comedy clubs and live music bars.

Find Castlefield in the southwestern part of central Manchester. Arrive at the Deansgate railway station or ride the tram to the Deansgate–Castlefield Tram Stop. You can also travel by bus to one of the stops here or drive and leave your car in the NCP Car Park Manchester Bridgewater Hall. Explore the surroundings for adjacent districts such as Spinningfields and the Northern Quarter.
