See more of the local scenery on theAlps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail. The country's longest cycle route extends from the foot of the Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean and encompasses the area around Ohau. Cycle or walk along routes that pass by mountain peaks and turquoise glacial lakes.
There are also plenty of biking and hiking tracks aroundLake Ohau. They include the 5-mile (8-kilometer) Lake Ohau Track along the lake's shores. If you're looking for something more strenuous, hike up 4,993 feet (1,522 meters) to the summit ofBen Ohau Peak. This trek is part of theGreta Track, a 10-mile (16-kilometer) loop.
Spend a day at the lake and embrace the tranquility. Go for a swim, sunbathe and kayak on the still waters. Fish for trout and salmon. Speak to local guides about arranging day licenses and information about the best fishing spots along the shoreline.Appreciate the magnificent views which, on clear days, include Mount Cook. At 12,218 feet (3,724 meters), this is New Zealand's tallest mountain.
