Set between the Oakland and Greenfield neighborhoods of Pittsburgh, the 456 acres (184 hectares) of Schenley Park provide an ideal place to escape into the great outdoors. The second largest park in Pittsburgh, Schenley has been a favorite with locals for over a century.Enter through the grand Schenley Plaza and choose from a range of options for fun and exercise. Walkers and joggers will love the chance to explore the many miles of trails that run through the forests and around the hills of the park. One trail takes you around a large lake in an area known as Panther Hollow.Sports lovers will want to head to The Oval, where the majority of the park’s public facilities are located. Enjoy a game of tennis on one of the 13 courts or practice your swing at Schenley Park Golf Course. During the summer months, cool off in the park’s swimming pool. In winter, glide to your heart’s content on the ice rink. There’s also an 18-hole disc golf course.Bring a picnic and sit beneath a tree. Or, stop in for a coffee and snack at the Schenley Park Café. This building dates back to 1904, and has been restored to resemble the original structure. The nearby visitor center has maps of the parks walking trails and guides to the facilities. Schenley Park hosts regular events throughout the year. One of the most popular is the Vintage Grand Prix in July, which attracts more than 200,000 people. Another local favorite is the free outdoor movie series held on summer evenings. Schenley Park is open daily. It’s free to enter, although attractions such as the ice rink and golf course charge a small fee. Free parking is available on Schenley Drive on evenings and all day Sundays.
