For decades, Ohau Snow Fields on Mount Sutton has been the place to visit for snow sports and mountain trekking in the Mackenzie High Country. Neighboring Lake Ohau is one of the most picturesque lakes on New Zealand’s South Island. Ohau Snow Fields is a four-season adventure wonderland. Summer brings long daylight hours, while winter has reliable snowfall for powder-seeking skiers and snowboarders. Expect excellent runs for all levels, as well as two terrain parks.
Stay in the Ohau Snow Fields area any time of year for its laid-back, outdoorsy atmosphere and immediate access to some of the South Island’s best recreation opportunities. Ski season attracts all levels of skiers. The site is perfect for the beginner and intermediate skier, who can traverse down wide, flat slopes from the summit. More expert skiers can hike to untouched powder runs and more challenging terrain. Stop a moment when you reach the top of the chairlift to admire the views of photogenic Lake Ohau.
In summer, visit the Ohau Snow Fields area to bike along the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail, hike on the normally snow-covered slopes and fish for brown and rainbow trout on nearby Lake Ohau. Follow the walking and mountain bike trails in the region, including the Temple Forest walk and Huxley Gorge mountain bike excursion.
No matter what season you visit, make time for après-ski or post-hike relaxation at Lake Ohau Lodge, run by the same family that operates the snow fields. This is a great place to see and be seen in the winter, from June to September. The lodge is also open in the summer, between December and February, with a generally lighter crowd than during the winter.
Drive to Ohau Snow Fields up the 6-mile (10-kilometer) access road, catching glimpses of Mount Cook and Lake Ohau along the way. The drive takes about 20 minutes. The ski lodge has a parking lot. If you prefer not to drive, travel by bus from Lake Ohau Lodge, which leaves each morning and returns in the evening.
