Visit this emirate on the northwest coast of the U.A.E. to enjoy its easygoing charm, picturesque sunsets, sweeping beach, shopping and architecture.

Miles of pristine beaches, dolphin-spotting, historic architecture and traditional markets attract visitors to laid-back Ajman. Located on the northwest coast of the United Arab Emirates, Ajman is the country’s smallest emirate.

For many people, a highlight of Ajman is spending time on the picturesque beach, a 10-mile (16-kilometer) stretch of white sand lined with palm trees. Swim in the warm Persian Gulf water while staying alert for dolphins, which frequently approach the shore. Along the coast you’ll find private beach clubs, mostly owned by hotels. For a fee you can use the facilities, such as lounge chairs, sun umbrellas, swimming pools and water sports equipment.

Stroll along the Corniche, the waterfront boulevard, which is a great place for picnics and barbecues and to enjoy spectacular sunsets. Watch local fishermen bringing in the day’s catch at the Ajman Fish Market. Buy some fish and then take it to a nearby food stand to have it cooked on the spot. Visit the Dhow Yard to see the craftsmanship of dhow boatbuilding. It is reputedly the world’s biggest boatbuilding yard.

Learn about local history at the Ajman Museum, located in the heart of Ajman town. Set in an 18th-century fort, the museum features interesting displays of ancient weapons and tools, photographs and archaeological findings. Ajman town is a great place to shop, offering both traditional markets and modern shopping malls. Bargain with local vendors at the Ajman Gold Souk or browse the shops of Ajman City Centre, which also features an entertainment complex.

Investigate the grand architecture of the Sheikh Zayed Mosque in the Al Jurf district, and then relax in the nearby Al Jurf Family Park. Visit the exclave of Masfout to see castles and a 19th-century mosque.

A convenient way to get to Ajman is to fly to Dubai and then make the 30-minute drive by bus, taxi or rental car. With Ajman experiencing almost constant sunshine and blue skies, you can enjoy its attractions year-round.
