Wander the cobblestone streets to find striking panoramic views, historic architecture, lively squares and beautiful beaches. Start your walking tour of Old Town with a history lesson on Albufeira, from the Arabic “Al-buhera,” which translates to “the Sea Castle.” An earlier castle here was destroyed in 1755, along with much of the town, by an earthquake and tidal wave. Visit the Museu Municipal de Arqueologia, where you can see many Roman and medieval artifacts that predate the natural disaster.
Step inside the neoclassical Igreja Matriz church, which was built on an original church and castle gate site in the late 1700s. Its clock tower is one of Old Town’s most recognizable sights. Climb to the top of the tower for idyllic Albufeira and coast views.
Move on to lively Jardim Square (Old Town Square), where you’ll find dining, entertainment, shopping and people-watching opportunities. Stroll along Rua da Igreja Velha to admire the historic center’s narrow streets and old houses.
Swim at one of the two main beaches below Old Town, accessible via tunnel, elevator or escalator. Choose from Praia do Túnel (Tunnel Beach) or Praia dos Pescadores (Fisherman’s Beach) both can be crowded on summer afternoons. Visit early or late in the day for a quieter atmosphere. Stay up late to enjoy Albufeira’s nightlife, including the bars and clubs in Old Town. Combine this area with the nearby Strip for live music, dancing and karaoke that may go on until sunrise.
Find Old Town Albufeira between the marina and the Strip. This part of town is extremely walkable. Alternatively, travel around on the local Giro bus system, which operates every half hour. Buy tickets from drivers.
