Start your walking tour of Old Town with a history lesson on Albufeira, from the Arabic “Al-buhera,” which translates to “the Sea Castle.” An earlier castle here was destroyed in 1755, along with much of the town, by an earthquake and tidal wave. Visit the Museu Municipal de Arqueologia, where you can see many Roman and medieval artifacts that predate the natural disaster.

Step inside the neoclassical Igreja Matriz church, which was built on an original church and castle gate site in the late 1700s. Its clock tower is one of Old Town’s most recognizable sights. Climb to the top of the tower for idyllic Albufeira and coast views.
