Cafayate
Travel Guide

Rugged mountain landscapes form an exhilarating backdrop to this laid-back town in northern Argentina known for its picturesque vineyards and excellent wines.

Visit Cafayate to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of this historic desert town. Discover artisanal food and handicrafts and venture into the stunning valleys and ruins that define the wild landscape.

Surround yourself with the awe-inspiring landscapes of the Quebrada del Rio de las Conchas nature reserve located north of Cafayate on the highway that leads to the nearby city of Salta. Join a tour winding through this marvelous gorge to see the astounding rock formations glowing with rich hues of pink, red and ocher. The incredible Los Castillos (The Castles) and El Obelisco (The Obelisk) are unique sandstone formations shaped by thousands of years of wind and water.

Investigate local winemaking culture on a tour of the fantastic vineyards located within walking distance of the town’s main square. Tour the historic building of Bodega Nanni, which began producing wine in 1897. Participate in the tasting session or linger over some local cuisine in the restaurant.

Stop at Bodega Domingo Hermanos to enjoy a glass of torrentes, a local specialty wine, or enjoy the high quality tasting at the Bodega El Esteco that is situated in beautiful grounds. There are bottles available for purchase directly from the vineyard shops. Wine tasting activities incur a fee and may need to be booked ahead of time.

Rent a bicycle from the main square and ride out to the delightful Cabras de Cafayate to learn about making goats cheese. The tour of the farm lasts for 1 hour and includes meeting the resident herds and the option to purchase some delicious products.

Walk around the Ruinas del Divisadero to explore the remnants of an ancient Diaguita-Calchaquí settlement. Take a tour or drive to the site located 4 miles (7 kilometers) southeast of Cafayate.

Arrive in Cafayate by bus from the city of Salta that is located 117 miles (189 kilometers) to the north and has an international and domestic airport.

Experience the beauty of this desert oasis that will entice you to linger and explore.

"The surrounding location is nice but the experience was very disappointing. This hotel has no local flair: it is as if you were in Miami. We had a superior room in which we literally couldn't sleep. The AC was old, very noisy and stunk like habano cigar. The breakfast was very basic. All in all, ..."…"

Some people commented on the long drive from Cafayate to Vinas de Cafayate Wine Resort. The drive is 3 km on a dirt road but it’s easy to find and absolutely straight. We didn’t think it was a problem and the location made the stay peaceful.
