Enjoy beautiful beaches, excellent surf breaks, and see whales or dolphins at one of the east coast's most popular towns.

There are plenty of good reasons why Coffs Harbour has been a popular beach destination for decades. It offers visitors the choice of many outdoor activities, including diving, hiking and surfing, as well as markets and high quality restaurants.

Get hold of a surfboard, change into your swimwear, and jump into the waves. Check out Park Beach for the town’s best-known break. Conditions are perfect for surfers and those who prefer bigger waves, but can be rough for younger children. Head over to Jetty Beach for calmer surf and a view of the marina.

For a look at some local marine life, go diving in the Solitary Islands Marine Park. You’ll see dozens of species of fish, turtles, and sharks. Visit Dolphin Marine Magic to get up close to dolphins and porpoise. Wander out to Mutton-bird Island to see where Wedge-Tailed Shearwater birds nest. Between June and November you’ll also have a chance to spot migrating whales. Choose one of several nearby national parks and head out to explore some of the local countryside. There are hiking trails, waterfalls, and untouched creeks.

Head back to town and watch the sun go down from a comfy spot on the beach or up on a balcony. If you’re around on a Friday evening, grab a bite to eat and catch some music at the markets near Park Beach. On Sundays you can find arts and crafts on sale at the Jetty and Harbourside markets.

Coffs Harbour was named after a captain who rode out a storm in the area back in the 19th century. In the 1900s timber and food crops became the area’s economic mainstay, and in the latter half of the century tourism became a prominent industry. Today farming is still big business, but Coffs Harbour is best known for its great beaches and relaxed locals.

Coffs Harbour is a town with a great community, some stunning beaches, and access to several national parks.

We rocked up here as part of our "Pacific Wanderings Road Trip" - driving from Sydney to Byron Bay - at night. This was the view from our tent in the morning. Stunning! A great place to stop on a road trip and I wish we could have stayed longer. Kayaking, surfing, beach, hiking...it has it all. AND views like this! #roadtrip #mooneebeach #camping #NSW
