Along a winding road from Duong Dong and through the picturesque forest of Phu Quoc National Park, idyllic Ganh Dau provides welcome rewards for determined travelers. Explore the tropical Ganh Dau Cape, swim in unspoiled, blue-green waters and look northwest to spot the Cambodian coast.
The trip here is a significant part of the experience of visiting Ganh Dau. Access this remote commune via red dirt roads from Duong Dong through the lush Phu Quoc forests between mountains and sea. You’ll also pass a number of old-fashioned villages, supported by the labor of traditional Vietnamese farmers.
As you come out of the jungle, admire the exotic beauty of the Ganh Dau coastline. The sparkling 0.3-mile (0.5-kilometer) beach looks like a poster for a tropical haven, framed by clear, calm seas on one side and two forested mountains on the other.
Head to the tip of the cape and look out onto the waters that separate Vietnam from Cambodia. Koh Seh Island, easily visible, is part of Ream National Park.
Though Ganh Dau remains a small fishing village, local residents are very friendly and love to chat with visitors. Try some of the fresh seafood dishes of shrimp, fish and squid, which they’ll happily prepare at very affordable prices.
For a seafaring adventure, rent a boat and explore the nearby islands of Hon Ban and Hon Thay Boi. This way, you can easily spot Phu Quoc’s marine life, including lively coral reefs and tropical fish while snorkeling.
After seeing the coast, drive back toward Duong Dong and follow one of the scenic hiking trails that meander through Phu Quoc National Park. Alternatively, stop at nearby Cua Can Village and spot some of the differences in traditional island lifestyles.
Ganh Dau is a daytrip drive north from Duong Dong. Rent a motorbike in the city to make stopping at interesting spots along the way easy.
