With fishing villages, beaches and the lush national park spreading over nearly half its area, this Vietnamese island is a great spot for a relaxing vacation.

Closer to Cambodia than mainland Vietnam, the island of Phu Quoc has become an attractive vacation destination for people from around the world. Find your getaway spot in one of the major towns or in a beach resort and begin exploring.

The island’s biggest city of Duong Dong is on the western coast just north of the airport. One highlight is the Dinh Cau temple at the mouth of the Duong Dong River. Come here to watch fishermen traveling across the waters and paying respects to Thien Hau, their patron goddess. Sunsets here are particularly pretty, with reds and yellows of the temple and blue and white of a lighthouse in the foreground. Visit the nearby night market for meals, necessities and souvenirs. Arrange a tour of a pepper farm.

Head south to Long Beach, which earns its name for its 12 miles (20 kilometers) of golden sand and blue-green waters. Try snorkeling near the rocky outcrops to watch colorful fish.

Farther south, An Thoi is known for its fish sauce factories. The local Coconut Tree Prison has rather gruesome displays of historic treatment of prisoners.

Travel by boat to several beautiful islands just off the coast. Hon Dua and Hon Thom offer exceptional snorkeling.

Phu Quoc National Park covers much of the island, offering opportunities for hiking, kayaking and eco studies of plants and animals. Enjoy the peace while seeking lorises, macaques and orchids in the forest.

Experience traditional island life in small fishing villages. On the east coast, Ham Ninh is known for its seafood specialties. Stop at the Suoi Tranh Waterfall on the drive back to Duong Dong. North of the city, Ganh Dau and Rach Vem offer additional insights to customs and lifestyles, as well as quiet beaches, excellent food and friendly residents.

Get to Phu Quoc by flying into Phu Quoc International Airport just south of Duong Dong. Rent a car or a motorbike to travel around the island.

The resort was fantastic. The night maker is interesting but overall infrastructure needs a lot of development. However the people are very nice and accommodating.
