Museums dedicated to Southern soul music, the birthplace of Elvis Presley, superb restaurants and waterfront parks make this a great district to visit.

South Memphis is a district that’s alive to the beat of soul music and rhythm and blues. Stretching from Downtown Memphis to the Tennessee-Mississippi border, it’s an area home to hardworking locals, entrepreneurs and music legends. Experience the vibrant character of South Memphis at its museums and in restaurants serving delectable Southern fare.

Soulsville USA, the place where the Southern soul genre began, is a great starting point. Here you can retrace the footsteps of Al Green, Aretha Franklin and Isaac Hayes, among others. Head to the Stax Museum of American Soul Music to browse musical memorable and dance to songs recorded by Stax Records. Across the street is the Memphis Slim House, the former home of blue pianist Memphis Slim.

Historical landmarks sit tucked away on the district’s side streets. The Mason Temple was the location of Martin Luther King Jr.’s last ever speech I’ve Been to the Mountaintop, the day before his assassination. Visit the humble Aretha Franklin Birthplace. Attend gospel recitals at the Full Gospel Tabernacle Church, founded by Al Green in 1976.

The trip down musical memory lane continues at Graceland, the lavish and kitschy former home of Elvis Presley. Witness Presley’s love for ostentatious decor and see his family’s graves on a guided tour of the mansion. View his personal car collection at the Presley Motors Automobile Museum. Big-name bands and musicians take to the stage at the Soundstage at Graceland.

Satisfy your craving for hearty Southern classics by ordering a plate of award-winning barbecue at Marlowe’s Ribs and Restaurant. The Four Way soul food joint has welcomed esteemed guests such as Aretha Franklin and Jesse Jackson. Walk off your meals at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Riverside Park and T.O. Fuller State Park. Experience the peaceful environment of the Victorian-style Elmwood Cemetery.

South Memphis is a 10-minute drive from both Downtown Memphis and Memphis International Airport. Public buses travel through the district, although the most convenient way to get around is by car.

Ok, I’ve had BBQ from all the hot spots in the USA. Texas, North Carolina, a close second was Springfield , MO but this place topped them all. Central BBQ in Memphis, TN. The wait is usually out the door but it’s well worth it! I had to showcase it here if you’re visiting Memphis. It’s worth a taste. It’s my favorite!!!
