Montefalco is a scenic hilly town where medieval structures are surrounded by beautiful countryside landscapes. Admire the stone buildings and historic churches found in the town center for a sense of Montefalco’s intriguing past.

Taste the local grape on a daytrip with Gusto Wine Tours. Try some of the region’s famous sagrantino di Montefalco, as you travel between enchanting wineries. Explore vaults full of wine bottles and barrels and learn about the wine production process. The tour includes a lunch featuring local produce and wines.

Find the family-run Paolo Bea winery in the southwestern part of town. Tour rooms filled with barrels and winemaking machinery. Inspect the grapes hanging from rows of vines, before tasting the winery’s red San Valentino or its white Santa Chiara. The Bea family has been making wine here for more than 500 years, in addition to growing fruits, vegetables and grains.

Stroll through the rolling, green countryside surrounding the town, admiring scenic olive groves, orchards and vineyards. Gaze up at the remains of Montefalco’s ancient city walls and take photos of its winding cobblestone streets and stone buildings.

Several churches can be found in the center of the town. Visit the Church of San Francesco for its museum, which features some of the commune’s finest artistic and historical treasures. Enter the church through its carved colonnade and look for Benozzo Gozzoli’s acclaimed 16th-century fresco portraying the life of St. Francis of Assisi.

Montefalco is located in the center of the large region of Perugia in the heart of Italy. Surrounded by the hills of Umbria, it is sandwiched between Foligno and Spoleto. Fly to Perugia San Francesco d’Assisi – Umbria International Airport and drive southeast for 22 miles (35 kilometers) to get here. Expect gorgeous summers, with the driest weather usually occurring in July and August. Winters are fairly mild.

Wine connoisseurs, history buffs and those who relish the countryside all appreciate the many charms of Montefalco.
