Visit a section of Virginia’s capital city that blends old with new. Follow a riverside trail through the area to connect with the rest of its urban surroundings.

Oregon Hill is one of many neighborhoods in Virginia’s capital city of Richmond. Its lofty elevation allows wide views of the region. Included in its assortment of residences are historic buildings, such as the national historic site, Tredegar Iron Works. Look for varying architectural styles in other buildings including Italianate, Greek Revival and Carpenter Gothic, which date to the post-Civil War era.

The neighborhood became part of Richmond when annexed in 1867, although many residents believe their quadrant is still unique from the rest of the metropolitan area. Good views of the James River on its southern border provide photo opportunities. Riverside Park with its North Bank Trail offers a pleasant stroll along its shores to Gambles Hill Park in an adjacent neighborhood. Along the way, find the Virginia War Memorial in honor of Virginian service people who died in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf Wars and wars of this century.

Visit the beaches along the river. Snorkeling and walking are popular pastimes on Texas Beach. Hollywood Cemetery, on the western boundary, is a historic area with plenty of scenic paths for reflection and solitude. Look toward Belle Isle beyond the rapids of the James River. Drive or walk there and enjoy a picnic or hike around the pretty site.

Virginia Commonwealth University is just past the neighborhood’s northern perimeter. Stroll through the campus to appreciate its historical importance. The school began in 1838 as a medical college. Health sciences are still very integral to the institution, as well as other important disciplines.

Wherever you venture in Oregon Hill you’ll notice the presence of trees and green spaces. Choose from many restaurants and coffee shops in Oregon Hill’s 18-city-block area.

Travel from downtown Richmond to Oregon Hill easily by using public transportation. The walk from central Richmond is only 25 minutes.
