Railway cottages, Tebay A village created just for the railways. Here there was an engine shed providing banking locomotives for the climb up to Shap summit and it was also a junction for the now closed Stainmore line to Barnard Castle.

The A685, Tebay The road leaving the main part of the village as it makes its way towards Kendal. The buildings ahead are just above the site of the former railway station. The former Junction Hotel is prominent. The narrow valley is that of the River Lune. It separates the Howgill Fells to the left from the foothills of the Lake District to the right. As well as the road, the M6 and the West Coast Mainline run through this gap in the hills.

Underwhelming. This is a very ordinary hotel, despite the hot tubs, pool and spa. The decor is vile, all dull browns with turquoise. In the “Troutbeck” room there is a nasty trip hazard into the bathroom. A stubbed toe was annoying but a cracked skull would have been more so. Tip: if it’s not fixed ...

Great views from the lodge and clean rooms with lots of amenities. Windermere Lake was a 25 minute drive which was really convenient and Lancaster was a 15 minute drive. Although it was a short stay, we really loved our time here!
