Taller than Niagara Falls, Toccoa Falls is located within the wooded campus of Toccoa Falls College. Wander along the accessible pathway to see the free-falling cascade surrounded by lush greenery. Access the trail through the Gate Cottage Gift Shop, where you’ll find candles, crafts and souvenirs depicting the waterfall.
Hike along the spectacular nature trails of Currahee Mountain. This is the south-easternmost mountain of the Blue Ridge chain and part of the Chattahoochee National Forest. Appreciate nature and history combined at Paul Anderson Memorial Park. A landscaped garden features a fountain and a statue of the 1956 Olympic gold medalist it’s named after. At Traveler’s Rest State Historic Site, discover an early tavern and plantation home designated a national historic landmark. Tour the house, built around 1815, to see furnishings and original artifacts from the era.
Historic Downtown Toccoa hosts the Stephens County Historical Society Office and Currahee Military Museum in the renovated train depot. Delve into the history of the soldiers who trained here to become paratroopers, inspiration for the television series Band of Brothers. You’ll also see a horse stable built in 1922 that once housed Able and Easy Companies. Arrive by train to Toccoa’s Amtrak station or drive about 1.5 hours from Atlanta. Downtown Toccoa is a walkable area and public transportation is readily available for exploring this stunning part of Georgia.
