Quebec’s past is well preserved in this former walled city reminiscent of Europe but located in North America.

Continuously hearing French being spoken adds to the charm of the experience of being in Québec City’s Upper Town. Old stone buildings, narrow cobblestone streets and fortification walls remind you that you're in North America, not an old-world European city.

Stay at or visit the prominent feature in this part of town, Fairmont le Château Frontenac. It was built in 1893 as a luxury hotel and remains exceptional today. A collection of memorabilia in its lobby traces 400 years of the region’s history.

From the hotel, enjoy an expansive view of the St. Lawrence River and Lower Town located on the other side of the wall. Walk down to the oldest part of the city or ride the funicular. Be sure to look back in the direction of Upper Town to appreciate the 3-mile-long (5-kilometer) fortification that dates back to the late 17th century, when it was originally used as protection against English troops.

Shop, eat and be entertained in Quartier Petit Champlain on one of the oldest commercial streets in North America. Not far from the walls is La Citadelle de Québec, built by the British as defense against anti-Loyalist forces to the south.

Visit the citadel to hear historical accounts provided by docents in period uniform. Set your watch to the noon cannon fired from the ramparts. The changing of the guard occurs daily, providing an excellent photo opportunity. A nearby park marks where a significant battle occurred on the Plains of Abraham between French and English forces in 1759.

Wander the streets to explore parks and view architecture that is among the most unique in North America. Time your visit for the Québec Winter Carnival in February, when the area is alive with many traditional live music performances.

Get to Upper Town by flying directly to Québec City or traveling via Montréal. Close your eyes and you may imagine you’ve traveled to France.
