The church of St Ethelbert in East Wretham. The church of St Ethelbert > 1404082 with its distinctive saddleback tower was rebuilt in 1865 for the Birch family by the architect George Street and furnishings as well as stained glass > 1758761 date from this time. The only older survival is the Norman south doorway > 1404084. The font was made in 1883 of Corsham stone and the font cover > 1758750 was designed by architect JA Reeve, who based his design upon the medieval one in St Mary's church in Elsing > 890945. The frescoes on the east wall > 1758744 were painted 150 years ago by the then Rector, Revd JP Whalley, who also painted the font cover > 1758751 and the carved reredos > 1758748. What is believed to be an unusual royal arms - it is for Queen Elizabeth I (1558-1603) - in stained glass > 1758756 can be found set into a north wall window, hiding behind the organ > 1758754 which is a particularly good example of an early instrument built by James Corps in 1866, and is listed as Grade II in the British Institute of Organ Studies' register for historic pipe organs. The floral decoration on the organ case - executed by Revd JP Whalley - was discovered under a thick coat of blue paint which has since been painstakingly removed.

View south along Bridgham Lane past West Harling Common. West Harling, a village in the Thet valley, was deserted in the first half of the 18th century. Originally part of a cluster of settlements which all had the name 'Herlinga' in 1086, three of these had become known as West Harling (with its church of All Saints'), Middle Harling (with St Andrew's church) and Harling Thorpe. Middle Harling became part of West Harling parish in 1543. With a new Lord of the Manor, Richard Gipps, the fate of the until then fairly prosperous villages changed: Gipps bought all the houses except for one small cottage and so had reduced the number of dwellings. Gipps' heirs closed the old road, and the foundations of the demolished church in Middle Harling were uprooted to build up a marshy ground. All Saints church today stands isolated, the Hall built by Gipps was demolished in 1931 and conifer plantations cover much of his estate. What remains is a bust in the church 1709354 placed there by his great-nephew.
